After the ink experiments, the first real step was to research the Lord of thee rings’s ethical, cultural and artistic impact on the world. I wanted to do this because I’m a reader of Tolkien and had read The Lord of the Rings recently, tying the two together nicely. Whilst researching previous depictions of The Lord of the Rings, I came across a number of works that used watercolor to illustrate Tolkien’s environments and characters. This inspired me to test the medium and to consider other painting options. The decision to paint landscapes for my final three pieces was reached because of my research. I noticed that most of the artwork depicted characters or events with the world only acting as a background to the action. After some consideration, this got me painting landscapes. I learned much from this project. At first it did not go well as I did not have a direction and could not start my work or enjoy it without a compelling theme. After I found a direction that I liked, I worked hard to catch up with my peers and enjoyed creating artwork about something that interested me. This lesson should prove doubly helpful for my final major project which is on a much larger scale. I will be placing a lot of focus on not only finding a theme quickly but also on finding one that compels me personally. Continue reading “Unit 2 evaluation”

Peter Jackson’s live action trilogy adaptation is by far the most popular adaption and for many is the only look they have ever taken into Middle earth and the characters that inhabit it. These films take a gritty, more serious approach to the world and try to make it more believable, excluding some of the more outlandish elements from the books such as incredibly tall trees and Gollum’s eyes that are described in the books as being so beady and bright that they can light up a dark area. The latter two films are both rated 12 but both depict adult themes and can be enjoyed by almost anyone. Continue reading “Research into the various depictions of Tolkien’s work”
For this project I will study and depict the world of J. R. R. Tolkien as I see it and as it is described my Tolkien himself. I will use several different mediums to do this which will require me to learn new skills such as Photoshop and painting. In particular, I am hoping to capture the strange mood of Tolkien’s world as depicted in his book The lord of the rings as it delves into more detail than it’s predecessor “The Hobbit” whilst still remaining more madcap than “The Silmarillion”. Accomplishing this with multiple mediums would be ideal; in both experimentation and final pieces. This concept relates to my interest in fantasy literature and more specifically, the worlds that the stories are told in. The concept further relates as I would also be interested in creating a dungeon synth album and some writings of my own in a similar vein to Tolkien’s work. Continue reading “Project proposal”
An essay that I wrote about visual art styles in today’s games over Christmas, I would like to adapt it into a video essay in the same vein of Nerdwriter1’s videos on art, film and music; eventually.
Dishonoured
Dishonoured is a first person stealth action game created by Arcane studios and published by Bethesda in 2012. It is a steampunk game with an alternate history twist and a dark, mature atmosphere. Because of this, Dishonoured is rated an 18+ and is aimed at adults who prefer a slower based and more methodical style of action game. However the game is not very realistic as it has plenty of magic and advance technology, I think this led the designers to give the game an oil painting art style to make the world feel less real and more fantastical.
